Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) Fellowships

Through a Title VI grant from the US department of Education (US/ED), the African Studies Initiative, in collaboration with the Institute for Global Studies, offers Summer 2016 and Academic Year 2016-2076 FLAS fellowships to promote the study of modern foreign African languages.

All African languages taught at the University of Minnesota (Arabic, Portuguese, Somali and Swahili) are FLAS eligible languages. In addition to those languages, approval of which is automatic, there is a possibility to study other African languages through CIC course Share during the academic year and through study at another US institution or abroad during the summer.

Funding available:

  • Summer: $2,500 living stipend PLUS up to $5,000 for tuition and selected fees
  • Academic Year: $15,000 living stipend PLUS up to $18,000 for tuition and selected fees.
